Zonal Cavity Method

The Zonal Cavity lighting calculation method, sometimes referred to as the Lumen Method , calculates the average maintained horizontal illuminance on a work plane. We'll discuss the basic equation and then build on it until we have the final equation needed to carry out a design. Examples will be given as we go along to help illustrate.

Let's start with the basics first. Since illuminance is a measure of the luminous flux or rate of light flow falling on a surface area, we can write the basic expression

"illuminance equals luminous flux per surface area."
Or in units,
"Footcandles equals lumens divided by square feet."
